Jura E8 Won't Turn On? Power, Standby and Reset Fixes (Step by Step)
A dead Jura E8 is unsettling on a premium machine, but the cause is usually simpler than it looks: a power problem at the wall, the machine sitting in energy-save standby, or electronics that just need a proper reset. Because the E8 is a sealed, premium automatic, there isn’t much to tinker with inside — but that also means the fixes that work are quick and external. Let’s rule out the free things first.
One quick distinction up front: this guide is for a completely dark, unresponsive machine. If the screen lights up at all, the machine has power — that’s a message or fault to read on screen, covered in the messages guide, not here.
First, dead — or just asleep?
- Blank screen, no response to the power button → power or reset problem (Causes 1–3).
- Screen was off but wakes on a button press → it was in energy-save standby (Cause 2).
- Screen lights up but won’t brew → a message/fault — see the messages guide.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Dead in one socket, works in another | Outlet / breaker | Cause 1 |
| Wakes when you press a button | Energy-save standby | Cause 2 |
| Dead until a 60-second unplug | Needs a hard reset | Cause 3 |
| Screen lights up, won’t brew | Message/fault (not “dead”) | See messages guide |
| Dead everywhere after a reset | Internal power fault | Cause 4 |
Cause 1 — The outlet, cord and switch (rule this out first)
Why it happens: Dead sockets, tripped breakers, loose plugs and a half-pressed power button all look exactly like a dead machine and cost nothing to check.
The fix:
- Test the outlet with another device.
- Try a different socket on another circuit.
- Check your breaker / RCD.
- Make sure the cord is firmly seated at both ends and press the power button deliberately.
If another device works in that socket and the E8 is still dark, move on.
Cause 2 — Energy-save standby (not actually off)
What it looks like: The screen is dark, but the machine isn’t truly off.
Why it happens: The E8 powers down its display after a period in energy-save mode to save power.
The fix: Press a button or the power switch to wake it. If it springs to life, it was simply in standby — adjust the energy-save / auto-off timing in settings to match how often you use it.
Cause 3 — It needs a proper reset
What it looks like: Unresponsive despite a known-good outlet, often after a power blip or a glitch.
Why it happens: The electronics can lock up; a full power-cycle clears the state.
The fix:
- Switch off and unplug from the wall.
- Wait a full 60 seconds.
- Make sure the tank, drip tray and grounds container are seated.
- Plug back in and power on.
Cause 4 — Internal fuse or power board (service territory)
What it looks like: Stone dead in every known-good outlet, even after a cool-down and a proper 60-second reset.
Why it happens: Rarely, an internal fuse blows or the power board fails, sometimes after a surge.
The fix: The E8 is a sealed premium machine — there’s little user-serviceable inside, and opening it isn’t a casual job. If it’s under warranty, contact Jura; this is exactly what it covers. Out of warranty, a Jura service centre can diagnose the fuse or board. Don’t keep cycling power hoping it returns — if a good outlet plus a proper reset does nothing, it needs professional attention.
Common mistakes that make it worse
- Assuming it’s broken before testing the outlet in another socket.
- Mistaking energy-save standby for a dead machine — try a button press first.
- A too-quick off-and-on instead of a full 60-second unplug.
- Treating a lit screen as “won’t turn on” — that’s a message to read, not a power fault.
- Attempting to open a sealed premium machine without the skills to work safely around mains power.
Repair or replace?
Most “won’t turn on” cases are free fixes — a different socket, waking it from standby, or a proper reset. Those revive the large majority of machines. A genuine internal power fault is the only service scenario, and because the E8 is sealed that’s a Jura repair, not a DIY part swap. Given the machine’s value, a service repair is usually worth weighing against replacement — but try every free step first.
Stop it happening again
- Use a reliable outlet, ideally on a surge protector, and avoid flaky extension leads.
- Learn the energy-save behaviour so a dark screen doesn’t alarm you; tune the timing in settings.
- If it ever locks up, reach for the 60-second unplug reset before assuming the worst.
- Keep the tank, tray and grounds container properly seated.
- Shut it down cleanly with the power button rather than at the wall when you can.
