Espresso Machine Making a Loud Noise? What the Sounds Mean and How to Quiet It

Espresso machines are loud, and most of the time that’s completely normal — but it’s hard to know that when yours suddenly sounds like it’s about to take off. The single most useful thing to understand is this: nearly every home machine uses a vibration pump that buzzes loudly by design, and that buzz means nothing is wrong. What matters is change. A machine that has always buzzed the same way is healthy; a machine that’s newly louder, gurgling, screeching or grinding is telling you something. This guide helps you tell one from the other, and fix the noises that actually mean trouble.

Normal loud vs. problem loud

Normal: a strong, steady 50–60 Hz buzz or hum whenever the pump runs — while brewing, filling the boiler, or steaming. It may make the machine and the counter vibrate. Steam boilers also hiss, and thermoblocks tick and creak as they heat. All fine.

Worth chasing: any noise that is new or has changed — gurgling and sucking, a high screech, a harsh rattle, a knocking, or a machine that’s clearly louder than it used to be. That’s the list below.

The causes of a new loud noise

1. Low or badly seated water tank (air in the pump) — most common

What it looks like: a sudden gurgling, coughing or screeching, often with weak or sputtering water. Why: if the tank is low, empty, or not pushed fully onto its intake valve, the pump gulps air instead of water and gets loud and rough. How to confirm: check the level and reseat the tank; the note usually changes immediately. Fix: fill the tank, push it firmly home, and run water (a blank shot or the hot-water tap) until it flows steadily and quietly.

2. Air-lock / needs priming

What it looks like: loud pump, lots of noise, little or no water. Why: an air pocket in the line stops the pump getting a solid column of water — common after refilling from empty or after descaling. How to confirm: water barely comes out despite a full, seated tank. Fix: run the steam/hot-water tap with the portafilter removed until water gushes and the air clears. Full steps: not pumping water.

3. Limescale in the intake and waterways

What it looks like: a machine that has grown gradually harsher and louder over months, maybe with weaker flow. Why: scale narrows the passages, so the pump strains and sputters. How to confirm: hard-water area, overdue a descale, slow creeping change. Fix: run a full descale; the pump note often smooths out afterwards.

4. Loose pump or mounting

What it looks like: a rattle or buzz that’s louder than before and seems to come from the body, not the water. Why: vibration pumps are held by rubber mounts that can loosen with age, so the pump rattles against the chassis. How to confirm: the noise is mechanical and present even during a normal prime. Fix: this is an internal fix; on an out-of-warranty machine a technician can re-secure the mount. It’s a comfort issue, not usually a danger.

5. It’s the grinder, not the pump

What it looks like: a harsh grinding, rattling or screech that happens while grinding, not while water pumps. Why: a stray stone or foreign object in the beans, jammed beans, or worn burrs. How to confirm: the noise tracks the grind phase, not the brew phase. Fix: empty and check the hopper for foreign objects, and see grinder problems.

By machine type

  • Portafilter machines: almost all noise complaints are the normal pump buzz or an air/tank issue. Reseat the tank and prime first.
  • Bean-to-cup automatics: you’re hearing two machines — a pump and a grinder. Separate them by when the noise happens. Grinding noises point at the hopper and burrs; pumping noises at water and scale.
  • Pod machines: these are often the loudest relative to their size because the small pump works hard. A new gurgle still means air or a descale is due.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a loud buzz is a fault — for vibration pumps, it’s normal.
  • Running the machine dry while it screeches, instead of adding water and priming.
  • Ignoring a descale until the pump is straining and sputtering.
  • Confusing grinder noise with pump noise and chasing the wrong part.
  • Refilling but not seating the tank on its valve, so the pump keeps sucking air.

Repair or replace?

Most noise “faults” cost nothing — top up and reseat the tank, prime out the air, or descale. A loose pump mount is an inexpensive technician fix and a comfort issue rather than a safety one. A genuinely failing pump (very rare, and usually accompanied by loss of pressure or water) is repairable on higher-end machines and often not worth it on cheap ones. Rule out air and scale first; they explain the overwhelming majority of loud machines.

Stop it happening again

Keep the water tank topped up and firmly seated, descale on schedule so scale never strains the pump, and check the bean hopper for stray stones if you grind your own. Learn your machine’s normal voice — the steady buzz, the hiss of steam, the tick of the heater — so that when a new sound appears, you’ll notice it early and know it’s worth investigating. If the loudness comes with weak or missing water, carry straight on to not pumping water.

Add water, prime it, and the noise and the risk both go away.
Why does my espresso machine gurgle or make a sucking noise?
Gurgling and sucking are the classic sound of the pump drawing air instead of water. The tank is low or not seated on its valve, there's an air-lock in the line, or the intake is starved. Fill the tank, push it home firmly, and run water until it flows steadily and the gurgle disappears. Could a loud noise be the grinder and not the pump?
Often, yes — especially on bean-to-cup and grind-equipped machines. A harsh grinding, rattling or screeching during the grind phase points at the grinder: a stray stone or foreign object among the beans, worn burrs, or beans jamming. That's separate from the pump's brewing buzz. If the noise happens while grinding rather than while water is pumping, look at the grinder and hopper, not the pump.
Can descaling make my espresso machine quieter?
It can. Limescale narrows the intake and waterways, which makes the pump work harder and sound louder or more strained, and it can cause sputtering. If you're in a hard-water area and overdue a descale, running a full descale often smooths the pump note and restores flow.
