Nespresso Vertuo Leaking Water? Find the Source and Stop It

A pool of water under a Nespresso Vertuo being wiped up

A puddle under a Vertuo looks worrying, but most “leaks” are an overflowing capsule bin, a tank that’s slightly off, or simple condensation from the hot capsule it just ejected. Find where the water actually shows up and the cause is usually obvious — and cheap.

First, locate the water

  • Under/behind, pooling: capsule container & drip tray overflow first (Cause 1), then tank (Cause 2).
  • Around the head when brewing: head not locked or a damaged capsule rim (Cause 3).
  • In the used-capsule bin: mostly normal ejection drip (Cause 4).

Cause 1 — Full capsule container / drip tray

Why it happens: Each brew ejects a wet capsule into the container and drips into the tray. Let them fill and water backs up and overflows onto the counter.

The fix: Empty the used-capsule container and the drip tray. Make it a habit — the Vertuo drips a little every brew by design, so a full bin is the most common “leak.”

Cause 2 — Tank not seated, or cracked

Why it happens: The tank seals through a valve that must seat on the machine. Slightly off, overfilled, or cracked, and it weeps at the back.

The fix: Remove the tank, check for cracks (hold it full over a sink), wipe the valve and seating area, and reseat firmly and straight.

Cause 3 — Water around the head when brewing

Why it happens: If the head isn’t fully locked, or a capsule’s rim is dented, the seal isn’t complete and water escapes around the capsule during the spin.

The fix: Lock the head firmly every time, and use undamaged genuine Vertuo capsules. If it still sprays with a good capsule and a locked head, the head seal may need cleaning or checking.

Cause 4 — Condensation / ejection drip (normal)

Why it happens: The Vertuo drops a steaming-hot capsule into the bin, which condenses and drips. A little water in the bin and tray is expected.

The fix: Nothing — just empty the bin and tray regularly. Only treat it as a fault if water reaches the counter.

Why it happens: Heavy scale stops internal seals seating cleanly, causing slow weeps.

The fix: Run a full descale with Nespresso descaling solution, then rinse. See our descaling guide. It resolves scale-related weeping and protects the machine.

Repair or replace?

Vertuo leaks are almost always a cheap fix: empty the bin/tray, reseat the tank, lock the head, or descale. Only a genuine internal seal failure is a real fault — and on a Vertuo that usually points to replacement over a paid repair.

Stop it happening again

  • Empty the capsule container and drip tray regularly.
  • Reseat the tank firmly; don’t overfill.
  • Lock the head fully and use genuine, undamaged capsules.
  • Descale on schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Vertuo leaking water from the bottom?
Usually the used-capsule container and drip tray are full and overflowing, or the tank isn't seated and weeps at the back. Empty the container and tray, reseat the tank, then watch a brew to see if it still leaks.
Water comes out around the capsule when brewing — is that bad?
A little is normal if the head wasn't fully locked or a capsule's rim is damaged. Lock the head firmly and use undamaged genuine capsules. Persistent spray means the head seal needs checking.
There's water in the capsule bin after every coffee — leak?
Largely normal — the Vertuo ejects a hot, wet capsule and some water drips into the bin. Empty it regularly. Only worry if water escapes onto the counter.
Could scale cause a Vertuo to leak?
Yes — heavy scale makes internal seals and valves seat poorly and weep. If you're overdue, descaling often stops a slow internal leak.
