Nespresso Vertuo Not Pumping Water? How to Get It Flowing Again

Lifting the water tank off a Nespresso Vertuo to clear an airlock

A Vertuo that spins up but delivers nothing is almost always a simple airlock or a head that isn’t quite locked — not a dead pump. The fix takes a minute and no tools.

First, check the obvious two

  • Is the head fully locked? The Vertuo won’t pump properly unless the lever is turned all the way to locked. Half-locked = no flow.
  • Is there water, and is the tank seated? A tank that’s slightly off reads as empty and the machine won’t pump.

Sort those, then re-prime.

Cause 1 — Airlock (the usual culprit)

Why it happens: When the tank runs dry or after descaling, air gets trapped and the pump churns air instead of water.

The fix — re-prime:

  1. Fill the tank and seat it firmly.
  2. Lock the head with no capsule inside.
  3. Press the button to run water straight through into a cup.
  4. Repeat once or twice — the air clears and water flows steadily.

Cause 2 — Head not locked / capsule not read

Why it happens: The Vertuo reads a barcode on the capsule rim and needs the head fully locked to start. A non-genuine capsule, a damaged rim, or a half-locked head stops the brew.

The fix: Open and firmly re-lock the head. Use a genuine Vertuo capsule seated flat. If the light blinks oddly, see the blinking light guide.

Cause 3 — Scale blocking the circuit

Why it happens: The Vertuo’s water path is narrow, so limescale chokes flow quickly in hard-water areas — often showing as weak flow then none, plus a descale alert.

The fix: Run the full descaling procedure with Nespresso descaling solution, then a clean-water rinse. This clears the circuit and usually restores flow and temperature together. See our descaling guide.

Cause 4 — Tank valve or filter

Why it happens: The tank feeds through a valve that must seat on the machine; debris or a poorly seated tank stops water reaching the pump.

The fix: Remove the tank, rinse it and the valve area, and reseat firmly and straight. Make sure nothing is blocking the outlet.

Cause 5 — A failing pump (rare)

Only after airlock, head lock, tank and scale are ruled out should you suspect the pump. A failing pump delivers little water no matter what. Given Vertuo pricing, a paid pump repair rarely makes sense versus a replacement.

Repair or replace?

Priming, locking the head, reseating the tank and descaling fix the vast majority — all free. Only a genuine pump failure is a real fault, and on a Vertuo that usually points to replacement rather than a costly repair.

Stop it happening again

  • Don’t let the tank run dry; refill early.
  • Re-prime with a no-capsule brew after every descale.
  • Descale on schedule and always lock the head fully.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Vertuo run but no coffee comes out?
The pump is moving air, not water (an airlock), or the head isn't fully locked. Refill and reseat the tank, lock the head, and run a no-capsule brew to re-prime. Scale is the next suspect — descale if priming doesn't fix it.
How do I prime a Nespresso Vertuo?
Fill and seat the tank, lock the head with no capsule inside, and press the button to run water through. Repeat once or twice if needed — it clears the air and gets water flowing again.
It started after descaling — is that normal?
Yes, descaling and emptying the tank let air into the line. Re-prime with a no-capsule brew and it should clear within a cycle or two.
Could the pump be broken?
Rarely, and only after airlock, tank seating, head lock and scale are ruled out. A failing Vertuo pump usually means little water everywhere; given the machine's price, replacement often beats a paid pump repair.
