Nespresso Vertuo Coffee Not Hot? Why It's Lukewarm and How to Fix It
“My Vertuo coffee is lukewarm” is one of the most common Vertuo complaints — and it’s usually heat going to waste, not a broken heater. The Vertuo pours a relatively large coffee, often into a big cold mug, and serves cooler than a café shot to begin with. Let’s get it as hot as it can be, and spot the rare real fault.
First: lukewarm, or genuinely cold?
- Lukewarm / not hot enough: cup, scale and routine. Causes 1–3.
- Genuinely cold after a proper descale and heat-up: a heating fault. Cause 4.
Cause 1 — Cold cup (the biggest factor)
Why it happens: A big cold mug pulls the temperature of the coffee down fast — and the Vertuo’s larger pour spreads the heat thin.
The fix: Pre-warm the cup: run a no-capsule brew of hot water into it, tip it out, then brew your coffee. This is the single most effective fix.
Cause 2 — Scale on the heater
Why it happens: Limescale coats the thermoblock and insulates it, so the water heats less. Temperature drifts down over time in hard-water areas, often with a descale alert.
The fix: Run the full descaling procedure with Nespresso descaling solution, then rinse. See our descaling guide. This is the top cause of a Vertuo slowly going cool.
Cause 3 — Brewing before it’s ready
Why it happens: If you press brew while the light is still pulsing (heating), the water isn’t fully up to temperature.
The fix: Wait for steady white before brewing. It only takes 20–30 seconds from cold.
Cause 4 — A heating fault (rare)
Why it happens: If the coffee is genuinely cold after a proper descale and full heat-up, the thermoblock or a thermal component may have failed.
A note on Vertuo temperature
Even working perfectly, the Vertuo serves coffee cooler than a café espresso — the water contacts the grounds briefly and the pour is large. If it’s hot but not scalding, that’s normal for the system; a pre-warmed cup and a smaller cup size are the best levers.
Repair or replace?
Temperature issues are overwhelmingly free (warm cup, wait for ready) or cheap (a descale). A genuine heating failure on a Vertuo generally means replacement, since these aren’t economical to repair out of warranty. Under warranty? Contact Nespresso first.
Stop it happening again
- Pre-warm the cup every time.
- Descale on schedule (every ~300 capsules or 3 months).
- Wait for steady white before brewing.
