Nespresso Vertuo Won't Turn On? Power Troubleshooting and Reset

A hand on the lever of an unlit, dark Nespresso Vertuo

A Vertuo that seems dead is often just asleep or facing a power issue at the wall — genuine machine failure is the last thing to suspect. Work through this in order.

Cause 1 — It’s asleep, not dead

Why it happens: The Vertuo powers down to a sleep state after about 2 minutes of inactivity to save energy. No light doesn’t mean no power.

The fix: Press the button, or lift/move the lever. It should wake and light up. If it does, nothing’s wrong — that’s normal power-saving.

Cause 2 — The wall outlet and cord

Why it happens: Dead sockets, tripped breakers and loose plugs masquerade as dead machines.

The fix:

  1. Test the outlet with another device (phone charger, lamp).
  2. Try a different socket on another circuit.
  3. Check your home’s breaker/RCD hasn’t tripped.
  4. Make sure the cord is fully seated at the machine and the wall.

Cause 3 — Stuck state → button reset

Why it happens: The machine can land in an unresponsive state after an interrupted brew or power blip.

The fix: With water in the tank and the lever unlocked, press the button 5 times within 3 seconds. The light flashes to confirm a factory reset. This revives many unresponsive Vertuos.

Cause 4 — Turns on then shuts off

Why it happens: Usually the normal ~2-minute auto-sleep. If it cuts out mid-brew instead, that’s an overheat or error state.

The fix: If it’s just sleeping, wake it with the button. If it shuts off during a brew, let it rest 10 minutes, ensure the head is locked and the tank is full, and check for a blinking error.

Cause 5 — Internal power board (rare)

Why it happens: If a known-good outlet and the button reset don’t bring it back, the internal power board or a fuse has likely failed.

Repair or replace?

The wake, outlet and reset steps are free and revive the large majority. A genuine power-board failure on a Vertuo generally isn’t economical to repair out of warranty, so that’s the point to consider a replacement. Under warranty? Contact Nespresso first.

Stop it happening again

  • Remember the ~2-minute auto-sleep — a press wakes it.
  • Keep it on a reliable outlet; avoid daisy-chained extension leads.
  • Keep water in the tank so resets and brews never run dry.

Frequently asked questions

My Nespresso Vertuo is completely dead — where do I start?
Press the button or lift/move the lever first — the Vertuo auto-sleeps after about 2 minutes and may just be asleep. Then test the wall outlet with another device, try a different socket, and check your home's breaker/RCD. Inspect the cord is fully plugged in.
How do I reset a Vertuo that won't respond?
With water in the tank and the lever unlocked, press the button 5 times within 3 seconds — the light should flash to confirm a factory reset. This revives many unresponsive machines.
It turns on then shuts off — why?
That's the automatic power-save: the Vertuo sleeps after ~2 minutes of inactivity. Press the button to wake it. If it shuts off mid-brew, that's different — let it cool and check for a blinking error.
Outlet works and reset didn't help — now what?
If a known-good outlet plus the button reset don't revive it, the internal power board has likely failed. The Vertuo isn't economical to repair out of warranty, so contact Nespresso or plan a replacement.
